From The Inner Circle (UNITED STATES) –
Although Donald Trump’s takeover of the Republican Party has overshadowed this story of late… it’s important to be aware that the European Union (EU) now faces the biggest existential crisis in its 23-year history.
After narrowly avoiding a Greek exit from the EU, the 28-member-state union now faces an even greater threat. With a referendum set for next month, Britain could now be on the way out. Fears of a “Grexit” have become fears of a “Brexit.”
How did we get here?
As recently as 2012, British prime minister David Cameron rejected calls for a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU. But then came the rise of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) – a populist Euro-skeptic party that threatened to outflank Cameron’s Conservative Party on the issue.
In 2014, UKIP barnstormed its way to first place in the European Parliament elections – with almost one-third of the vote. Cameron calculated that the Conservatives needed to stymie the rise of UKIP… or see the insurgent party erode the Conservative vote. His plan: to steal UKIP’s thunder and back a referendum on Europe.
Now, the polls show a tight split between voters who want Britain to leave the EU and those who want Britain to remain. Europe’s future hangs in the balance…
