One thing I have learnt in life is that we are all looking for easy answers, at least when it comes to investing.
I remember a former landlord of mine perpetually asking for stock tips and spoiling two to three hours of mine, almost every Saturday.
We don’t want to do the hard work necessary to come to any big decision. We just want someone else to tell us what to do. So, that if it doesn’t work out, we can always blame him or her.
In short, we are all looking for experts, who can tell us exactly which decisions to make.
As Michael Lewis writes in his new book The Undoing Project—A Friendship That Changed the World:
“The human psyche… [has a] hunger for an expert who knows things with certainty, even when certainty is not possible… It’s like a movie monster that’s meant to have been killed but it is somehow always alive for the final act.”
